Compiled in 1086, it was mainly a valuation of land and a register of who owned it.

[When it was decided to print this work the treasury board came up with an estimate of £20.000
for the cost of printing and engraving 1250 copies, each containing 1664 plates. This was
too expensive so it was placed in the hands of John Nichols who designed the type,
and was cut by Mr Jackson]
Two volumes containing the Indices and Additamenta were published
by the record Commission in 1816
